3) Framing : Frame Edges

Any subject that is obscure from the main view and exposing only certain parts of the body at frame edges, would have an implied presence. A visual flow of the subject is enhanced by the direction of the subject’s bodily direction.

For example: If there is any leg sticking out from the left side of the frame edges and toes pointing towards right on a pavement, would suggest that a person might be walking from left to right. Only thing is that we cant see the person yet as he is still out of the frame. This would imply that a person (the dimension of implied subject or point) walking into the frame (direction of visual flow from left to right).

But one has to be careful in not “cutting up” body parts. One way to do this is to use adjacent supporting structure to imply sense of motion or whether the thing is intact. This could be anything from a pathway or building etc.

Please do note that this is not only applicable to humans or animals but physical objects as well.

2) Visual Design – Making the picture works.

Every visible object attracts attention by its tone, color, shape, size, location, or other physical properties and characteristics. The degree to which it attracts attention is known as its visual importance or weight.

Competition for attention between objects of similar or differing weights, called tension, keeps our eyes constantly moving so our normal visual experience is dynamic.

Good balance usually means taking advantage of tension without letting the visual pull of any one object get out of control.

The study of tension is called visual design. Visual design is the application and knowledge of how the “points” help to make the picture works.

I am going to kick off with a series of interrelated topics on composition and some others. They might not have to follow in any certain orders. Some of you might find it smelly or some might like it. So keep an open mind if you are stuck in the rut or a newbie.

1) Frames.
The main purpose of a framing composition to be retain visual tension within the picture. What can used as frames:

a) interconnecting objects that might be different.
b) shadows and light
c) focus zoom
d) window frames, photoframes or other frames.
e) your imagination….
